NOVELTY | Heohwan Simulation ss12

Photobucket

Photobucket

Meet Heohwan Simulation, a London based label established by Hwan Heo 3 years after graduating from the Royal College of Art. During February´s Fashion Week Heohwan Simulation was one of the four designers on the rise to be part of the ´Ones to Watch´ presentation. But last season the collection was presented with an intriguing video in which the models move backwards and forwards which makes you almost lose perception of time. The futuristic aesthetics of the clothes and the use of high tech materials only add to this innovative view on fashion. You could say I´m obsessed.

NOVELTY | ss12 J. JS Lee

images: London Fashion Week

J. JS Lee (Jackie Lee) is one of those designer that make garments that look pretty basic at first sight. But when looking a bit closer, you'll find details that make them everything but plain. Like the slightly assymetric blazer-dress or the use of laqué fabric in a suit. I first discovered her when visiting London Fashion Week earlier this year, as I arrived at the exhibition area her team was just unpacking the fw12 collection that came fresh from the runway. (Will share those snapshots as soon as I'm ready to talk about winter ;) )

NOVELTY | Neil Barrett AW12

Yes, the capelike attachment and the exaggerated bomber jacket are genius. And how is that jacket in the middle even constructed? I wonder if there are two holes for your arms between the short and the long part. Although they are all black on black, they are beyond interesting. This is how I want to get through the winter.

*Interior design note: How cool would it be to make a setting like this lookbook's on one of your walls?

Stiff boxy skirts seen at J.W. Anderson, Tibi, Acne, Alexander wang.
The not so curvy silhouette that they create has something feministic about it which I totally dig.

NOVELTY | The Netherlands is Vogue Approved

Editor in chief Karin Swerink and I

When I first heard the news that Condé Nast approved The Netherlands for being Vogue worthy I was skeptical.
Is this frugal country that despises luxury and decadence, that always chooses comfort over aesthetics going to have it's own Vogue? Yeah right.

I was wrong because as of March 22 we will have our own Vogue. The first issue was presented to the press today. I was invited to an intimate lunch get-together where the enthusiastic new team of editors told us all about their first issue. It was so special to be among the talented group of bloggers and online journalists to get a first glimpse of Vogue Netherlands!

Karin Swerink(editor in chief) says that times have changed and that even the girls from the village where she grew up, save their pennies for a pair of expensive shoes. Though Karin herself still doesn't dare to tell her mother that the shoes on her feet are worth 500 euros.

What I liked the most about the new Dutch Vogue is that they are so driven to make high quality content. The magazine is packed with editorials and interesting interviews. For example a feature about the closet of one of Raf Simons' employees or an intimate 8 page interview with Inez and Vinoodh. Karin and her team brought a breeze of optimism to the Dutch fashion scene, finally!

SHOES | Simone Rocha Footwear

At London Fashion Week I got the chance to see items that I only know from images saved on my computer. Simone Rocha's little corner was one of the highlights of what designers where showcasing at the Sommerset House; two racks with the most unusual materials, and of course her famous footwear; the elevated oxfords from last season in leather and transparent plastic. And these grey, cheetah printed, pony skin derbies with transparent sole for next autumn. Seeing and touching the craftmanship, detail and smart designs left me in complete awe.

NOVELTY | Land ss12 Lookbook

Photobucket

This is my favorite look from the new spring summer lookbook from Land. Each season they expand their collection by adding new items and colours to their ever growing collection of garments. Which means that their clothes are not bound to season and will be always available throughout the years. This panelled legging for example has already been part of Land for a few seasons but now just came in a new bright orange color. Land's inspiration is always the archetypal shapes of clothes; generic trousers, your typical tshirt or a basic button up shirt.

NOVELTY | LFW, Charlie May

Photobucket

Photobucket

Charlie May could have easily been the seventh member of the Antwerp six, if she were born 20 years earlyer. She presented a collection with a Belgian aesthetic last night in a rooftop suit of a chiq Soho Hotel here in London. Her models were dressed in long black, white and burgundy garments that were simultaneously flowy and structured. My favorite look was this white on white one, a sharp shirt with stark white leather jacket and subtle golden details.

When I was right about to give up on taking pictures in the shady space, Sandra from 5inch and up came to the rescue; she lend me her fat lense and gave me a photography-in-the-dark lesson. Sandra and Charlie weren't the only bloggers attending, the place was filled with some of the creme de la creme; Shini, Jen and even Zana Bayne were all there.

GUEST POST | Giuliano Bolivar

Photobucket

Giuliano Bolivar always goes a step further than expected. For example customizing some secondhand clothes turns into a full fledged collection and asking him casually to do guest post on Love Aesthetics has resulted in an entire production instead of some snapshots.

No 1 WE START TO GET REAL! This is the kind of outfit I would wear everywhere; to the library, school, parties, art gallery openings, supermarket, park, and the list goes on. Probably not exactly paired with leopard print wooden clogs as seen deliciously on the picture and not for taste matters but more according to the weather. It's just so exciting to clash one thing over the other everytime; a leopard trucker cap, woolen blend sheer button up shirt, with woolen H&M MEN skirt from the 90's and dutch leopard printed wooden shoes.

No 2 "WE BELIEVE IN EVERYTHING THAT SHINES!" don't we?! I only forgot who I was quotating right here, my apologies. This started out by me just grabbing really nice accessories and paring them with smpler basics. BUT not getting too crazy. From head to toe: Versace cat head golden choker, cropped long-sleeve black t-shirt with random sporty golden print (which I purposedly cropped as well), high waist black polyester carrot-shaped trousers, thin golden studded belt not worn as a belt.

LIFE | Stylist For Two Days At Modefabriek

Photography Mirjam Tonnaer, hair & make-up Anita Bok, models Aline van Schoonhoven, Lyanne Tonk and styling by me

Those who like Love Aesthetics on Facebook have already seen some backstage shots of this. Last month at fashion tradeshow Mode fabriek I styled a live photoshoot in the Trash and Treasures area; a space where visitors of the fair could shop for vintage and items of small independant designers. I ran around all day looking for the treasures among the trash and styled a photoshoot which could be watched by all the visitors of Modefabriek. These are three images from the 'lookbook' we put together. And allthough it was fun to be a stylist for two days, I'd rather be a blogger and a reporter.

NOVELTY | Ann Sophie Back aw12 13

images: Metro

This could have gone so wrong, all the ingredients for a cheap disaster were there; Ann Sophie Back's autumn/winter collection featured transparent plastic bra straps, net fabric of the kind that stripper pantyhose are made of and bright turqoise trousers. But of course, as we are used to from Ann Sophie, the looks that she sent down the runway last week in Stockholm were utterly stylish. And the footwear in clear plastic(the material of my dreams) with the visible thick wool socks inside... yes, go ahead, save that picture to your computer.

NOVELTY | Josh Goot aw09

Photobucket

Photobucket

This morning I found an old memory stick on which I had saved all the images of my diceased computer just before it crashed. It was so much fun discover a little archive that I had built of runway pictures, among it were these from Josh Goot autumn winter 2009 show. How relevant are these subtle color blocks?

OPINION | LaLa Berlin

Photobucket

Photobucket

Light blue boxy leather motorcycle jackets just arrived in Acne stores, similar monochromatic light pink ensembles have been in American Apparel window displays for years, the flowy long skirts with a dove print are a downright Ann Demeulemeester rip off and the metal cuffs have already been exploited by H&M and ASOS ever since they appeared on a Damir Doma runway a year ago. Lala Berlin isn't really what you would call a pioneer in fashion.

The collection was very aimed at the now, it was a cohesive mixture of today's trends. Trends that will get bigger and will be fully accepted by the mainstream by the time that these pieces hit stores. Not trying anything new and sticking with what's already popular is a safe and smart thing to do in this economy if you want to make money. But is it necessary and relevant to build a fashion show around these already available styles?

My first answer to that question was NO. But after giving it a second thought I realized that this style of dressing has been around
for a few seasons. Perhaps this age will be remembered for it like the 80's were remembered for their shoulder pads. Perhaps fashion is finally slowing down a bit.

Vanessa Friedman from the Financial Times came with some facts in a recent column that support these thoughts: "Indeed, the last major aesthetic change I can think of was more than a year ago, when Phoebe Philo’s rigorous minimalism at Céline sent her audience gasping and running to fill their wardrobes with men’s trousers and tailored cloth coats. As a colleague said the other day, “Indeed, the last major aesthetic change I can think of was more than a year ago, when Phoebe Philo’s rigorous minimalism at Céline sent her audience gasping and running to fill their wardrobes with men’s trousers and tailored cloth coats. As a colleague said the other day, “There’s nothing I feel like I need to buy in order to feel current, no ankle boot will fix all my problems.” Put another way: Polyvore, the do-it-yourself “fashion inspiration” website wherein members create and widely share their own collages built around specific items, just released its Year in Review report, which analyses user behaviour over the past 12 months, and the top five trends were: “prints, minimalism, monochrome, florals, men’s wear-inspired.” The sixth was ... trousers."

Conclusion: A collection that I would be happy to wear today, but which didn't contain much originality. It gave some food for thought and discussion about more long term trends. It was beautiful, styled impeccably, nonetheless for an independent designer to present Ann Demeulemeester skirts with another name on it is just not done.(sorry had to be said)

NOVELTY | Maurie and Eve Winter Looks

Photobucket

Actually the lookbook and the rest of the Maurie and Eve collection looked nothing like that first picture; There were flower printed dresses and pink sandals. But this suit consisting of a baseball jacket and a pair of suit pants in a thick white on white printed fabric (granny, better watch your curtains) is divine. What also can't go unmentioned is two 1900s styling details: the nose ring and those sporty sunglasses.

Besides their clothing line, Co-Te also produces a series of stunning accessories each season:
Get the gold studded belt here

Though CO-TE doesn't fit within the usual Italian aesthetic, it does follow the craftmanship tradition and quality of made in Italy. Co-Te comes from cote an old English word meaning shelter or protection, a returning theme within the brand. While this is only the third collection of design duo Francesco Ferrari and Tomaso Anfonssi, they have already gained recognition from journalists from WWD, Vogue and L'Officiel just to name a few. But it's not only about beautiful images in magazines, Co-Te makes clothes that women want to wear (I neeed nude leather for spring!!). Follow this young brand on Facebook.

My three favorite looks from CO-TE´s lookbook where they have combined nude colored leather with crispy white garments. My heart stopped. Will be posting more info about this brand soon soon soon!
